Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at the Canad Inns Polo Park, 1405 St. Mathews Avenue. Our schedule is as follows:

Speaker: Dean Campbell, CRSP, Regional Fire Marshall, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority

About the Speaker:

Dean Campbell, CRSP has 22 years experience in the OH&S field.  He has background in - Commercial explosives, Aerospace and Healthcare Dean is currently with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in the capacity of Regional Fire Marshal.

 

Dean also has 16 years experience in the Fire Service and background in Structural, Agricultural and Wildland fire fighting. He is currently serving as Fire Chief, Woodlands Fire Dept.

- Fire Fighter, Hazardous Materials Technician

About the Presentation:

Provision of Healthcare is a challenge in a rapidly evolving environment.  Safety challenges in Healthcare are huge given the unpredictability of human behavior especially when compounded by illness.  The presentation looks at the challenges of keeping a large organization spread across the entire spectrum of population and in various facilities, fire safe.  Compounding the challenge is a rapidly evolving field of practice where today’s norms are tomorrow’s antiquated ways.  The past, present and future of fire safety for a large organization (healthcare) is overviewed with some practical solutions that anyone can use in their own safety practice.

WCB Rate Setting - this prsentation will focus on how the WCB determines employers rats, and how to best mitigate rate increases through prevention, claim management, and effective disability management.

Speaker: Dave Kramer CDMP

Dave Kramer is a SAFE Work Coordination with the Workers Compensation Board and is a certified disability management professional.  Dave has worked with the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba for over 14 years and has extensive experience in the case management field.  Over the past decade Dave has held positions as a Case Management Representative, Adjudicator, Case Manager, and more recently as a SAFE Work Coordinator focusing on assisting Manitoban companies in the manufacturing section build stronger and more effective safety & health and return to work programs.

Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention and Ergonomics

in Healthcare

Kim Roer is an Occupational Therapist and is the Musculoskeletal Injury Prevention Program (MIPP) Coordinator at St. Boniface Hospital. With over 16 years experience in work injury management, Kim’s focus is on the prevention and management of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace.

She is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of various ergonomic programs such the Minimal Lift Program for patient handling, office ergonomics and Physical Demands Analysis as well as providing ergonomic assessments, consultation and numerous education/training sessions.

Kim will discuss the issues associated with MSI prevention in healthcare and best practice for injury prevention with a focus on the Safe Patient Handling Minimal Lift Program.

Keith Closen presented on how they managed to get 100 non industrial workers, who were not used to any type of safety program, to work 12 hour days for a rotation fo 21 days of work with 7 days off for a period of 5 months.  With 200,000 hours in a five month period, there were no loss time injuries, no medical assistance injuries and 3 minor first aids.
